EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charlottesville City Schools sought public input on new K-12 math curricula after Virginia’s board approved instructional materials in spring 2025. The board heard recommendations at its meeting Jan. 8 and plans to vote next month.  29 News
  • The Charlottesville school board will test later meeting times for its first three meetings of the year to gauge public engagement and see if a new schedule boosts attendance.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle County Fire Rescue named a new chief after a months-long search, appointing a familiar face to lead the team. The appointment comes as the department plans to keep up prompt emergency services in the area.  29 News
  • Charlottesville is accepting applications for project funding grants until February 7 to support local projects. Applicants should review the official guidelines for eligibility and requirements.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, Jan. 9, a local pediatrician in Albemarle County warned caregivers after the CDC reduced required childhood vaccines from 17 to 11, urging parents to consult their health providers for guidance.  CBS 19 News
  • UVA Health University Medical Center received a $500,000 grant and will use funds to boost isolation rooms — including respirators and tracking tech to fight infectious disease outbreaks. The upgrade supports readiness for high-consequence pathogens.  Cville Right Now
