COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank receives 30,000 lbs of frozen meat from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today, expected to yield over 90,000 servings (supporting local families in need).   • AARP Virginia is inviting local nonprofits, civic groups, and government organizations to submit proposals for Community Challenge Grants aimed at improving pedestrian safety, digital literacy, and housing until March 4 (deadline).  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School employees and the Albemarle Education Association reached a tentative deal that will grant raises and enhanced benefits starting July. The agreement offers three years of planned pay increases + expanded benefits and now awaits budget approval from the school board.  29 News

  • Councilor Michael Payne voiced privacy concerns today about new AI license plate readers in parking garages — local officials plan to review the technology to protect drivers.  29 News
  • City Manager Sam Sanders and a working group of homeless service providers are planning to convert a 27,000 sqft former office at 2000 Holiday Drive into a year-round low-barrier shelter. They will present revised price options and construction estimates (80 to 115 beds) to the City Council in mid-February.  29 News
  • State senators grilled UVA leaders about a DOJ deal, leadership search and diversity programs as lawmakers traveled to Richmond for the 2026 General Assembly session.  CBS 19 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Charlottesville Free Clinic is preparing for an increase in patients after ACA subsidies are set to lapse, risking coverage loss for nearly 400,000 Virginians. The clinic is ramping up its services as local residents await federal action.  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVA’s Thijs DeRidder is averaging 17.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in ACC play and will face ranked Louisville Tuesday night in a key matchup at UVA. The Belgian forward has scored over 20 points in seven games this season (he tallied 22 points against Stanford on Saturday).  Cville Right Now
  • The Cavaliers swam to record wins over Penn State on Senior Day at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, winning 154 to 61 by the women and 133 to 85 by the men despite a 32 point deficit. A record crowd of 1156 cheered the seniors before the team travels to Blacksburg Jan. 17.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The top collegiate golf team is using its mid-season break to refine individual workouts in Charlottesville ahead of eight spring tournaments starting Feb. 9 (coach Sargent said the break helps build strength and focus).
