CULTURE NEWS

  • The BANFF Film Festival returns to the Paramount Theater from March 6-8 with films about mountain culture. Organized by the Shenandoah National Park Trust, the 50th-anniversary event (its largest fundraiser) supports local conservation efforts.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sentara Martha Jefferson opened a childcare center after decades of planning; the $10 million Early Learning Center (serving up to 150 children) now supports hospital staff and local families.  29 News
  • St. Anne’s-Belfield School Grade 8 robotics team 'Next Level' qualified for the FIRST LEGO Robotics World Championship, scheduled to run from Apr. 29 to May 2 in Houston. The team earned its spot through strong local and regional competitions and is preparing to compete against top international teams.  3WV
  • On Friday, Jan. 15, 201 U.Va.-based faculty sent a letter challenging the rushed appointment of President Beardsley, citing improper vetting and conflicts of interest. They call for the appointment to be rescinded and a new presidential search to start after a full review of the process.  The Cavalier Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced on Thursday that more than $885,000 in matching grant funds is available to support 88 special events and festivals statewide. Local organizers can apply for the funds through the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Special Events and Festivals Sponsorship Program + the funds aim to boost community celebrations.  CBS 19 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Ridge Health District reported an uptick in whooping cough cases since students returned from winter break, with fewer than five recent cases among feeder schools. The district confirmed 30 cases since October and assures families that there is no widespread health threat (including Brownsville, Henley, and Western Albemarle schools).  29 News
  • UVA Health has opened an expanded primary and specialty care center at Zion Crossroads, nearly doubling the facility’s size — the second floor is active for patient care. The expansion gives residents increased access to services.  29 News

  • The Virginia wrestling team is battling a demanding road schedule forced by renovations as they prepare to host their first home match Friday in Charlottesville — a break after 12 consecutive away meets — and will welcome Stanford and Virginia Tech soon in crucial ACC duals.  The Cavalier Daily
  • UVA announced Friday that the JPJ court will be dedicated in honor of former men's basketball head coach Tony Bennett — recognizing his lasting impact on the team.  CBS 19 News
  • Virginia women’s basketball aims for an NCAA Tournament berth in the 2025-26 season after a transformational multi-million dollar donation raised high expectations.
