COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local outreach teams are stepping up to provide emergency shelter and supplies to unhoused residents as a severe winter storm is expected later this week, and community partners are coordinating efforts to safeguard lives amid rapidly changing conditions.  29 News
  • Grocery shoppers rushed stores as a winter storm nears, and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry saw unprecedented demand with 337 households served on Thursday (about 1,500 people) and over 3,000 served during three distribution days this week, leaving supplies low.  29 News
  • Local outreach teams are working with Charlottesville Human Services and local nonprofits (including the Blue Ridge Area Coalition for the Homeless) to offer safe shelter options as a major winter storm brings snow, ice and dangerously cold weather. They are checking encampments and moving people to hotels to protect those without reliable shelter until conditions improve.  29 News

  • UVa's slow search for a new provost enters its second year (following recent leadership shakeups) and officials say the process has not sped up. The university continues its internal review as stakeholders await further updates.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Mark Peake proposed that the brown-belted bumblebee become Virginia’s official state bee — he said the current European honey bee does not pollinate enough native plants. Lawmakers will soon debate his proposal.  The Daily Progress
  • Emergency management officials in Charlottesville and Albemarle are coordinating plans for Saturday’s winter storm that will bring power outages and delayed road clearing, urging residents to stay home. Emergency crews (including VDOT teams and first responders) will work around the clock (via phone coordination) to maintain services.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA poison expert warns that with winter storms approaching, Charlottesville residents should check their carbon monoxide detectors and ensure proper ventilation to lower exposure risk. Health experts note that this danger is often overlooked during the colder months.  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 14 Cavaliers swept Rice and No. 20 USC at a home ITA Kickoff Weekend (in Charlottesville), winning 4-0 each match and earning a spot at the Team Indoor Championships in February. They now prepare for road duals against Big Ten teams.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia’s women’s basketball lost to NC State 78-76 in overtime after a slow start and a second-half surge with Kymora Johnson scoring 26 points, and the Cavaliers will face Wake Forest Thursday at 6 p.m. and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash Sunday at 2 p.m.  The Cavalier Daily
  • North Carolina rallied past UVA 85-80, ending the Cavaliers’ five-game home winning streak in Charlottesville on Sunday. Players Caleb Wilson (20 points) and Jarin Stevenson (17 points) powered the Tar Heels’ strong second half.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia women's swimmers remained unbeaten after breaking NC State's pool records in a final dual meet at NC State's Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. The men's team finished 2-6, and Virginia will host the Cavalier Invitational (Feb. 5-7) as a final season tune-up.  The Cavalier Daily
