  • Charlottesville music therapist Renee 'Blue' O’Connell was honored as an Allen & Allen Hometown Hero for her work in service, care, compassion — community and family. She is one of 12 Virginia residents recognized by the law firm.  29 News
  • Charlottesville officials report only 12 volunteers have completed the United Way paperwork (while 221 households have requested help) for clearing snow from sidewalks, and they are urging residents to sign up to assist elderly and disabled neighbors.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A heavy snowfall and ice buildup caused the roof of Advance Auto Parts on Pantops to collapse, and the building is currently blocked off with caution tape and closed until further notice.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Blue Ridge Barbell, a new woman-owned gym in Charlottesville, will open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 21. The 4,000 sqft facility was built with local lifter help and offers robust equipment for indoor and outdoor training.  29 News

  • Charlottesville’s DMR Adventures and Waynesboro’s Studio Wayne earned Excellence in Ensemble awards and two JTF All-Star honors at a junior theater festival in Atlanta earlier this month (joining 141 teams nationwide) after months of preparation.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia Film Festival’s Year Round program runs through August at the Violet Crown theater. It began this year with 'Magellan' and will screen 'Immutable' on Feb. 3 (more films will be announced later) to offer fresh cinematic experiences for local audiences.  The Cavalier Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Forestry said more than 5,000 acres of forestland in Albemarle and Nelson counties are permanently protected by conservation easements (ensuring local natural areas endure) for future generations.  CBS 19 News

  • The Charlottesville Fire Department will host a town hall on Monday, Feb. 2, to collect community input on its new strategic plan (attendees can help shape future improvements).  29 News
  • After a winter storm left sidewalks icy and dangerous, the city issued 24-hour warnings (per city code) to property owners who have not cleared them and partnered with volunteers for help. City crews continue working on 49 miles of sidewalks, including 31 miles (safe school routes) to improve pedestrian safety.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

  • Boston College coach Earl Grant said he skipped watching UVA’s double-overtime win Tuesday so his team can benefit from scouting fresh play, as both UVA and Boston College played Notre Dame recently. The teams will face each other today in Chestnut Hill (Mass.).  Cville Right Now
  • No. 15 Virginia women's tennis earned its first road win against No. 13 Michigan at Ann Arbor yesterday — winning 4-2 — and will face Ohio State Sunday before heading to the ITA Team Indoor Championships in Evanston Feb. 6-10.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Blue Ridge Rotary Club hosts its first annual pickleball tournament today at Cville Smash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle as the event supports local literacy programs amid reduced federal funding.  Cville Right Now
  • JPJ dining hall in the University’s John Paul Jones Arena closed at the end of Fall 2025, ending a popular dining and bonding space for student-athletes.
