BUSINESS NEWS

  • Restaurants along the Downtown Mall were disrupted by lingering ice from a recent winter storm, which caused staffing, delivery, and customer access issues over the past week (some closed Sunday to Tuesday) before conditions later improved.  29 News
  • UVA student business owners from Wahoo Washers and UMovers are offering shoveling services for icy parking lots in Charlottesville as freezing temperatures persist today. They face challenges like snapped shovels and rock-solid ice yet remain busy helping residents free cars (using simple tools).  29 News

  • James Torgerson, U.Va.'s radio station WXTJ co-event director (second-year Data Science student) discussed the station's history, community house shows and radio production during a podcast recorded on Jan. 25. His insights highlighted WXTJ’s role on Grounds.  The Cavalier Daily
  • IX Art Park will get a new mural in Charlottesville in March; the project aims to refresh the park's artistic appeal.  CBS 19 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a recent Zoom meeting, Student Council passed a resolution supporting President Scott Beardsley and approved budget amendments and bylaw changes (including of HoosConcerned) to boost campus resources and promote stability amid leadership shifts.   • Charlottesville City Schools have opted against virtual learning during closures caused by icy weather and will add 2.5 makeup days with the first on Wednesday, Feb. 4 (schools are operating on a two-hour delay today).  29 News
  • U.Va. released its first federal civil rights compliance report that shows policy changes to meet a DOJ agreement. The report outlines the removal of DEI offices and race-based language from admissions and medical care, and future reports will be submitted quarterly through Dec. 31.  The Cavalier Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UVA women’s basketball team lost 76 to 64 on Sunday at Virginia Tech as its weak fourth quarter (only five assists in 40 minutes) hurt their chances for an NCAA Tournament push. They will play Miami at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at home.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The No. 15 women’s tennis team lost its dual match to No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday. The Cavaliers will travel to Evanston for the ITA Team Indoor Championships Feb. 6-10 ahead of ACC play starting Feb. 18.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia's softball team retooled its pitching staff with four returning pitchers and two Gatorade Players of the Year joining the mix. The new lineup will debut at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic in Conway, S.C. on Feb. 6 at 10:00 a.m.  The Cavalier Daily
  • No. 17 Virginia overcame a halftime deficit to win 73-66 over Boston College on the road, with Coach Ryan Odom praising the team's focus on interior scoring in the second half. The Cavaliers will return home Tuesday night to host Pittsburgh.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia's No.2 tennis team beat Vanderbilt 6-1 at Boar’s Head Sports Club. Coach Andes Pedroso praised returning Vanderbilt Head Coach Scott Brown for a sentimental homecoming – and Virginia improved its unbeaten record as it prepares for a road match against Ohio State Saturday.  The Cavalier Daily
