COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army is seeing more residents ask for help as snow, ice, and subfreezing temperatures continue to affect the area today. The organization says the rising demand reflects the challenges winter weather brings to those needing assistance.  CBS 19 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Following a winter storm, Charlottesville City Schools reopened Monday, Feb. 2, with a two-hour delay that continues today after police and firefighters escorted students (at 28 bus stops) amid icy roads and sidewalks. Officials said Public Works is working with a contractor to clear snow as conditions are assessed daily.  29 News
  • St. John School in Gordonsville, built as a Rosenwald School in 1922, now serves as a Family Life and Fitness Center (featuring a museum display that honors its legacy) and was reopened last November as a community space for education and unity.  29 News
  • Nontraditional students at the University are adding diverse perspectives to class; Edgar Hercila (49) and Taylor Tremaine (31) rely on veteran programs and scholarships to meet academic challenges and build community on Grounds.  The Cavalier Daily
  • On Friday, UVA offered admission to its largest group of early action applicants for the Class of 2030, breaking its previous record and highlighting growing local interest. The record-setting effort marks a milestone for the university.  CBS 19 News
