  • Albemarle Police held the first day of their Citizens’ Police Academy on Saturday when local residents toured the station, learned about patrol and traffic operations, and took part in a simulated crime scene investigation (where they learned to handle evidence), with sessions scheduled for the next two Saturdays.  Cville Right Now
  • Elkton Brewing Co. celebrated its six-year anniversary yesterday with live music, food, and special brews that united the community at a downtown venue. Neighbors enjoyed the festive atmosphere + looked forward to upcoming seasonal offers.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Voting is underway for the city's first storm drain art contest as local residents choose designs to brighten public spaces (contest rules will be shared soon).  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Virginia first-year is expanding his nonprofit support efforts into Charlottesville Public Schools after drawing on his childhood challenges with limited supplies. The initiative aims to boost student resources for a smoother school experience.  29 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eleven local agencies in the Invasive Plant Partnership are hosting National Invasive Species Awareness Week events, including a botanical walk Monday, a park tour Tuesday, and sessions through Friday at various venues. The initiative seeks to boost environmental literacy and encourage native plant protection.  3WV

  • At a Feb. 17 City Council meeting, Charlottesville residents and students voiced concerns that a planned multi-story student housing project on West Main Street — led by LV Collective — could spur gentrification and displace longtime community members while councilors reviewed minor zoning changes.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi will speak at UVA’s Rotunda on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 2:00 p.m. during the Karsh Institute of Democracy event series (she announced retirement in January) as she reflects on Congress’s role in meeting Americans’ needs.  3WV

  • Miller girls basketball won its first BRAC title in three years on Feb. 23 during the tournament; the team marked a key milestone + energized local supporters.  The Daily Progress
  • Virginia women's swim team clinched their seventh ACC title in Atlanta as they broke NCAA records and claimed 11 event titles. They set a new 400-yard freestyle relay record and will return in mid-March at McAuley Aquatic Center as favorites for the NCAA title.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia athletes shone over the weekend as the women's swimming team clinched its seventh straight ACC title in Atlanta with Claire Curzan leading the charge, the women's basketball team edged Louisville 74 to 72 to boost NCAA hopes, and softball coach Joanna Hardin celebrated her 300th win at Palmer Park.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia women’s lacrosse beat top-five Notre Dame 9-7 Sunday in South Bend, Ind. with standout efforts by Kate Galica and Madison Alaimo, as the team outshot its rival 26-to-15 while limiting them to 15 shots; the squad will face Stanford Saturday at Klöckner Stadium.  The Cavalier Daily
  • At Atlanta’s McAuley Aquatic Center, the Virginia men’s swim team finished seventh, with King, Williamson and Heilman medaling—King broke his school record in the 200 yard backstroke while the team set a new program record in the 400 yard medley relay, suggesting promise as the squad rebuilds.  The Cavalier Daily
