- ➤ After 28 years of service in downtown Charlottesville, South Street Brewery will close on April 6. Owner Taylor Smack is seeking a new buyer to continue its operations and invites the community to share a final drink and memories during its farewell month. Cville Right Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Charlottesville City Council is finalizing a budget that includes a 10.5% raise for school support staff costing about $2.6M and increasing the real estate tax rate by 2 cents per $100 of assessed value. The final budget will be adopted on Apr. 9 after public hearings. Charlottesville Tomorrow
- ➤ During Thursday’s meeting, the Buildings and Grounds Committee approved updates to a nine-year master plan for the College at Wise and a schematic design for a new research data center at Fontaine Research Park. The plan calls for new academic buildings and dorm renovations (adding 80-100 beds). The Cavalier Daily
- ➤ Families across Charlottesville — especially those with special needs students — can attend the Life After High School Transition Conference and Resource Fair today at Piedmont Virginia Community College from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The event covers college accommodations, employment, and skills for independent living. 29 News
- ➤ Albemarle County school staff recommended banning guest speakers from student clubs during lunch and the board will vote next Thursday on the proposal. Western Albemarle High’s Turning Point USA chapter plans to host its president for a lunchtime event — a change aimed at reducing classroom disruptions. 29 News
- ➤ Last Thursday, the Health System Board met at Boar’s Head Resort as Nursing School dean Marianne Baernholdt presented a 10-year plan to address faculty shortages and enhance programs; the Board approved U.Va. - ➤ Dr. Summerlyn Thompson, current principal at Walker Upper Elementary, will become the new principal of Charlottesville Middle School at the start of the 2026 – 27 school year as the school prepares to welcome 6th graders in August 2026. - ➤ Charlottesville will begin giving out 200 free trees on March 9 as part of its seventh Energy Saving Trees Program in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation—residents can choose from witchhazel, black haw viburnum, black cherry and tuliptree. 29 News
