  • Charlottesville Tom Sox host their annual Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, March 28 at Elks Lodge 389 next to Darden Towe Park from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.—players pay a $100 buy-in for a cap, dinner, water, and prizes for the top 20 finishers while proceeds benefit community engagement and player development.  Cville Right Now

  • An Albemarle County winery took top honors in the Governor’s Cup competition tonight at a local wine event. Celebration plans will mark the win with more community activities.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Following a March 12 board vote, Albemarle County Public Schools now require non-curricular clubs to host guest speakers only outside of lunch hours as part of a revised policy that also tightens fundraising rules after months of review and public comment.  29 News
  • At a Student Council meeting, officials heard from U.Va. police and emergency management about a swatting incident (Nov. 3) at Edgar Shannon Library, noting the use of access control over full lockdown.   • The new roundabout at Crozet Avenue, Rockfish Gap Turnpike, and Browns Gap Turnpike is open for drivers as Route 680 reopens while construction continues — VDOT says the design will reduce danger compared to the former stop-controlled intersection.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Health researchers found that patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had a 1.24 times higher lung cancer risk (due to immune cell reprogramming) and said vaccination can largely prevent these harmful changes. The study underscores the importance of timely vaccination for those with severe cases.  Cville Right Now
  • UVA Health is stressing screenings for colorectal cancer during March’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (a time to encourage early detection) to help Charlottesville residents take action early.  CBS 19 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 14 Virginia beat Virginia Tech 11-6 Friday in the Commonwealth Clash opener in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers will try to clinch the series today at 1 p.m. with starter Max Stammel.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Chance Mallory made a steal and hit a buzzer-beating 3 at the end of the first half to help UVA win against Miami in the ACC semifinals. He discussed the play and its impact after the game at UVA’s home court.  The Daily Progress
  • No. 10 Virginia defeated Miami 84-62 in the ACC Tournament title game. Ugonna Onyenso led with 17 points while Thijs De Ridder and Sam Lewis each scored 16 in a strong win that advanced the team.  CBS 19 News
