ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A chimney fire displaced six residents and seven animals from a home on the 2000 block of Scottsville Road Tuesday morning (7:54 a.m.) as fire rescue quickly evacuated everyone; no one was injured and residents are receiving aid from the Red Cross.  Cville Right Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • A UVa student-led a cappella ensemble won a national jingle contest on Tuesday, Mar. 17 (their first such win) in Charlottesville, marking a milestone for local talent.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University students report a challenging return as break ends and academic deadlines resume, with many feeling strained by high workloads and competitive pressures. Some are using outdoor activities and social time to balance stress and productivity.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The City is accepting applications for its Community Attention Youth Internship Program, a six-week paid summer opportunity for 200 youth (ages 14-21) running from June 22 to August 2. Participants earn $15 an hour for up to 20 hours weekly, and applications close on April 19.  29 News
  • On Monday, March 16, Charlottesville City Schools, Albemarle County Public Schools, and UVA dismissed classes early or shifted online as heavy rain made roads unsafe; officials checked transport conditions (including sidewalks and bus routes) to ensure safe student transit and meal access.  29 News
  • Claude Moore Opportunities is offering up to three $2,500 healthcare scholarships for community college students in Charlottesville and Piedmont; applicants must submit their request online by midnight March 31.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Charlottesville teen contracted meningitis after sharing a vape with friends, and while the teen said vaping still appealed, they vowed to avoid sharing devices in the future plus health officials advise caution to prevent further infections.  CBS 19 News

  • UVA announced Tuesday that alumni Richard and Donna Tadler donated $1 million to support the men’s basketball and golf programs, building on decades of support to boost athletic resources on campus.  Cville Right Now
  • Coach Lars Tiffany earned his 100th win on Feb. 21 when the Cavaliers beat the Seawolves, marking a decade of two national championships and strong Final Four runs, while the team will host the 2026 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships at Scott Stadium in May (the first in Charlottesville since 1982).  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia softball won a 2-1 series against Georgia Tech at Palmer Park this past weekend, with an early lead following an opponent error. The team heads to Syracuse for a three-game series starting Friday, Mar. 20.  Cville Right Now
