Good morning, Charlottesville. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 24th of March.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local groups like the Jefferson School Foundation and Charlottesville Salvation Army hosted the first Sleep Out Cville on Saturday night so residents could learn what it feels like to live unhoused by sleeping outdoors in tents and bags on the Jefferson School City Center lawn. The event included a prayer, a candlelight pause with a short film about homelessness, and remarks from local leaders such as Mayor Juandiego Wade and State Senator Creigh Deeds+ who stressed the need to help over 5,000 Virginians without shelter each night. 29 News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Four notable alumni of The Cavalier Daily—Meredith Kopit Levien, Kate Bedingfield, Lane DeGregory and Mary-Ellen Deily—shared their memories of working on the student paper and explained how that experience built the skills needed for later roles in journalism. Their stories highlight a journey from hard work in the newsroom to holding key positions at The New York Times, the White House and other major news outlets. The Cavalier Daily

- ➤ The University of Virginia sent out all of its regular decision acceptance letters after receiving thousands more applications than last cycle—closing its admissions round in Charlottesville. 29 News
- ➤ During the 2024-2025 academic year, the University—historically the last public institution to become coeducational—has three major student self-governance bodies led exclusively by women including Harper Jones, Valentina Gonzalez and Laura Howard. They credit past mentors for shaping their leadership styles while working to expand student engagement and address barriers for future female leaders. The Cavalier Daily
- ➤ Charlottesville City Schools expanded walk zones so students now walk three-quarters of a mile to school — a change that challenges children from Westhaven with long, cold journeys in winter. Some parents in low-income, historically Black neighborhoods worry the longer walks hurt attendance and learning — and local community leaders call for more support to get kids to school safely.
