CRIME NEWS

  • Vasillios George Pistolis, a 26-year-old ex-Marine, was convicted by an Albemarle County jury for using fire to racially intimidate during a torch-lit march at the University of Virginia on August 11th — his sentencing is set for July 18th.  The Daily Progress

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hatton Ferry, which served the James River for 155 years, was hauled from the water on March 19th by a crane-assisted crew, ending its run as the nation’s last public hand-poled ferry. Joe Liesfeld of Rassawek Vineyard now owns the vessel—he plans to display it during the vineyard’s annual autumn festival—and it stands as a preserved piece of local history.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 26th, the Virginia Board of Education began revising the grading system for state tests to match NAEP proficiency, a move that may cause many students to face tougher high school exit exams. Board members said the change is meant to address declining performance—though the new cut scores have not yet been set.  The Daily Progress
  • On Wednesday, a virtual event called Co-Opting AI Privacy was co-hosted by the University's Karsh Institute of Democracy, the Sloane Lab, and New York University's Institute for Public Knowledge. University Law Professor Danielle Citron and Professor Jasmine McNealy discussed how data from sound recordings and health apps may compromise privacy and marginalize certain groups—prompting calls for federal action and greater community oversight.  The Cavalier Daily

  • Albemarle County received a grant of more than $600,000 from GO Virginia to fund the design plans for Rivanna Future—a project to develop a mixed-use campus for national security innovation that follows its 2023 purchase of 462 acres, with work set to begin by the end of the year.  29 News
