CULTURE NEWS

  • Highland, the historic home of James Monroe, will begin its celebration of William & Mary’s 50th anniversary of stewardship later this month with a lecture by Executive Director Sara Bon-Harper on April 28 at 7 p.m.—she will share the home’s history and announce a series of talks planned for the fall.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVA research finds that many school mental health professionals lack training for managing students returning from emergency departments after mental health crises. The study shows that while only about 8% of students are admitted, most are sent back to school without clear communication—leaving staff unprepared to meet their needs.  29 News
  • Jefferson Trust awarded more than $115,000 in flash grants to support student-led programs at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville—these funds will boost several campus projects.  CBS 19 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dominion Energy Virginia filed paperwork with the State Corporation Commission—its first base rate filing since 1992—to request a monthly increase of $8.51 in 2026 and $2 in 2027 for residential customers. The company also seeks a $10.92 monthly fuel rate increase—as a measure to cover rising costs and inflation—if approved to take effect on July 1.  3WV
  • The Charlottesville Police Department is installing speed cameras near Johnson and Summit Elementary School and Buford Middle to fine drivers for speeding and keep school zones safe.  29 News
  • VDOT is asking Charlottesville residents to share their thoughts on the busy Ridge—McIntire intersection through an online survey open until April 7 to help guide a study on traffic safety and flow. The STARS study, a joint project with the City of Charlottesville, will use the feedback to assess daily vehicle volumes from 2,000 to 21,000 and recommend changes.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
