  • Today, Charlottesville hosts its 22nd marathon that is expected to draw about 1,200 runners in full, half, and 8k races and cause road closures from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Market Street from First Street N to Third Street NE will be closed—heaviest delays are expected between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.  29 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Charlottesville Police Department is investigating a shooting near downtown that occurred early Friday morning.  CBS 19 News
  • Zara’s Chance, a nonprofit animal rescue in Greene County, is accused of neglecting exotic animals and misleading authorities while employing a convicted child sex offender who hosted children’s birthday parties — local veterinarians report that animals including a lizard and a rabbit died in care — as authorities begin reviewing its practices.  The Daily Progress

  • Grey’s Anatomy star Jason Winston George, a Virginia Beach native and UVA Class of '94 graduate, will serve as the Valedictory speaker for Finals Weekend from May 16 through 18. He will speak at JPJ on May 16 at 3:30 while Michael Suarez and Cedric Rucker are scheduled for May 17 and May 18.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center now offers aquablation, a new water jet procedure that removes extra tissue from enlarged prostates to ease bladder issues. Doctor Gregg Eure said the treatment is 85 to 90 percent effective—offering a safer option with fewer side effects than other methods.  29 News
