CRIME NEWS

  • Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Hingeley said prosecutions from the August 11 torchlight march on UVA Grounds by white supremacists carrying torches are likely finished—his statement came after a final conviction of a former Marine—and he noted his jurisdiction does not cover violence that happened downtown Charlottesville.  3WV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alex Zan will host the Black History Pathway event at 1 p.m. on April 19 at the Carver Recreation Center. The event will honor the contributions of Black musicians in Central Virginia—featuring stories from elders and families—by celebrating local music history.  29 News

  • More than 100 people attended Alumni Hall Thursday morning to learn about UVA’s Facilities Management Apprenticeship Program—a path that offers job security without a four-year degree. Gregory Weaver, who returned to the program after nearly 20 years, and Sayed Jalal, seeking new career opportunities, explained how the program helps keep campus facilities running.  29 News
  • College student Laura Howard stepped down as Honor Committee Chair Monday after introducing new procedures that let students explain their actions before further punishment — she was succeeded by third-year Engineering student Thomas Ackleson.   • Eleven Charlottesville high school students received a total of $250,000 in college scholarships from the Emily Couric Leadership Forum. Top recipients Seenam Dumor from Monticello High School (received $35,000) and Olga Salama from Charlottesville High School (received $50,000) said they have big career aspirations.  29 News
  • Two seniors from Charlottesville High School won major scholarships to help pay for college — Ali Bird earned a full ride as a Jefferson Scholar to the University of Virginia and Olga Salama received a $50,000 award from the Emily Couric Leadership Forum.  Cville Right Now

  • State lawmakers held a committee meeting in Alexandria on April 8—where they noted that federal research funding cuts have led to canceled grants and may force Virginia colleges to raise tuition or limit research programs. The committee said the cuts will ripple through Virginia's economy—prompting NOVA to launch a $1 million scholarship program for laid-off federal workers.  The Daily Progress
