BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pollak Vineyards uses anti-frost candles to protect grape buds when temperatures drop below 32. Wine maker Benoit Pineau said the candles — made with beef tallow and palm oil with a cardboard wick — burn for eight hours and are reused after warm mornings.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albemarle County Schools has begun kindergarten registration and is accepting pre-K applications for 4-year-olds and for 3-year-olds with special needs; School Board Chair Kate Acuff said families of children who turn 5 by September 30 should register soon using one application that covers four programs—Special Ed, Title 1, Head Start, and Bright Stars—to set head counts for fall.  Cville Right Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Activists held April's Climate Cafe to discuss how using solar power can help lower climate change. The Community Climate Collaborative led the event—local leaders said small choices in energy use can push fossil fuels out.  29 News

  • Albemarle County school board chair Dr. Kate Acuff updated on budget challenges, early childhood program expansion, and growing school enrollment after a recent meeting. She said spending cuts may need to be made before a balanced budget will be adopted on May 8th (300 new students were added last year and more than 1,000 are expected over the next decade).  Cville Right Now
  • Albemarle County's Commonwealth Attorney Jim Hingeley said that George Pistolis will likely be the last person charged for the 2017 torch rally that changed our community. He said more charges may come if more names emerge—while his office is pleased with the eleven convictions reached after a long process.  29 News

  • UVA Health is using Cytalux (a prescription medication that makes cancerous tissue glow under a special light) to help surgeons find small, hidden lung tumors. The new tool is used in operating rooms today and may improve outcomes for lung cancer patients.  29 News
  • UVa President Jim Ryan apologized for dismissing staff who signed a letter of no confidence—he said his remarks were disrespectful after a $4 million investigation led to Health CEO Dr. Craig Kent’s resignation amid mounting concerns about the health system's leadership.  The Daily Progress
