COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Brooks Family YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day, a free event to keep kids active and families engaged, on Saturday, April 18 from noon to 2 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a petting zoo, bounce house, games, and a fun run (among other activities) at the YMCA.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DISH Network pulled WVIR off its service over a month ago after Gray Media extended deadlines during severe weather and major sports events, but DISH refused to meet renewed proposals and imposed new demands; viewers can still watch WVIR on other providers.  29 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On March 2, Orange-based Zamma Corporation closed suddenly without issuing a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice, leaving about 130 workers jobless. As of April 13, county economic officials say company leadership remains silent while local agencies assist displaced workers.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School Board will hold a working session on school resource officers on April 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the Booker T. Reaves Media Center at Charlottesville High School (open for community input) after a March 2025 vote reinstating them prompted an online petition by local parents and teachers.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Forestry warns that wildfire risk rises with dry weather and winds during the spring fire season, now through April 30. Residents are advised to be cautious when burning debris and follow the burn law (allowed from 4 p.m. to midnight) to prevent accidental fires.  29 News
  • Local officials and community advocates mark International Dark Sky Week to raise awareness of light pollution and its health impacts today. Proclamations from Charlottesville and Albemarle urge residents to lower outdoor LED use and help protect starry skies for people and wildlife.  Cville Right Now
  • Virginia’s spring fire season is in effect through April 30 under the statewide 4 p.m. burn law as the Department of Forestry warns that dry weather and high winds increase wildfire risk (nine in 10 fires are human-caused). Residents are urged to avoid burning, keeping water and shovels nearby.  29 News

  • Governor Abigail Spanberger signed a new law that changes prescription approval rules. The bill limits actions by insurance carriers from altering authorizations within six months for initial prescriptions and 12 months for renewals unless regulators + manufacturers act.  29 News
  • Gov. Abigail Spanberger approved up to $191 million in state grant funds for AstraZeneca (the biopharma company) as it builds a $4.5 billion weight loss drug plant in Albemarle County.  The Daily Progress

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charlottesville is planning to expand its free housing near U.Va. Health so more families can stay during long NICU visits. The group will add rooms from 18 to up to 43 on a donated property + start a fundraising campaign.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Charlottesville Free Clinic launched a food as medicine program to offer free, locally grown groceries to 50 high-risk patients weekly — the initiative partners with 4P Foods and involves UVA students in on-site produce distribution.  29 News
  • Earlier today at UVA Health volunteers celebrated Daisy Day by delivering buckets full of fresh flowers to hospital patients, brightening the wards. The event honored the longtime local tradition of community care and support.  29 News
