COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 13th annual Tom Tom Festival is underway today in Charlottesville—its goal is to bring together all parts of the city.  CBS 19 News
  • Affordable housing projects at Southwood and 501 Cherry Ave now face extra hurdles after Congress cut federal earmark funds in March; local developers said the projects will continue but must find new money to move ahead (one project had planned to receive nearly $1.1 million) and plans now may progress more slowly (alternative funding remains uncertain).  Charlottesville Tomorrow

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 25, Student Council approved the University Guide Service as a Contracted Independent Organization after it lost its previous Special Status Organization status in February, allowing the group to run its own historical tours and seek new funding. The Guide Service plans to explore non-governmental organization status to strengthen its image and funding while keeping a door open for future work with the University.  The Cavalier Daily
  • Students, faculty, alumni and community members gathered in Old Cabell Hall on Tuesday afternoon to remember John T. Casteen III, the University’s seventh president from 1990 to 2010, who died on March 18 at 81. He was honored for his role in expanding the University’s academic space and financial stability—efforts that left a lasting impact on the institution.  The Cavalier Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • AAA Traffic Safety Foundation released survey results showing many Virginia drivers misunderstood the risks of driving after using cannabis, and penalties for driving high are the same as for alcohol. The survey found 85% drive on the same day they use cannabis and nearly half believe their driving is not impaired — experts warn this view could lead to dangerous roads.  29 News
  • On April 10, family and friends arranged for Claiborne Miller-Davis's two horses to visit her at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital so she could see them one last time. Miller-Davis, a lifelong equestrian and nurse, died the following day after battling stage 4 cancer.  The Daily Progress
