COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlottesville community leader Price Thomas, executive director of City of Promise, discussed how unaffordable housing influences food, transportation, education, and workforce development on Morning News. He said that unstable housing makes it hard for youth to stay in one school and urged more investment to help families.  Cville Right Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Albemarle County Police Department arrested Grady M. Hampton, 56, from Fredericksburg on April 24 for three counts of online solicitation of a minor under 15 (he is held without bond at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as the investigation continues).  Cville Right Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rappahannock Electric Cooperative is proposing a new rate for data centers that use at least 25 megawatts so local ratepayers avoid extra costs. The plan bills centers a monthly fee based on needed capacity — and keeps costs separate if a data center shuts down.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, UVA Food Pantry and UVA Dine held a Swipe Drive that let students donate unused dining swipes, with each swipe turning into a pound (1 lb) of food for those in need. Organizers said last fall’s drive raised thousands of pounds and they hope for similar support this year.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • About 300 local residents protested outside the Albemarle County courthouse after watching a video that showed plainclothes federal agents detaining a man without proper identification—protesters chanted about a lack of due process and potential rights violations. The demonstration reflects growing community concern over how rights are upheld during enforcement actions.  3WV
  • Charlottesville is moving forward with a plan to create a land bank authority that would buy and sell properties to help with affordable housing. The authority would support deals with developers (with a public hearing scheduled after the Housing Advisory Committee meets) to get more housing into the community.  29 News
  • Joe Platania, Charlottesville’s Commonwealth Attorney, joined Morning News to say law enforcement and event organizers kept the TomTom Festival safe—he noted that thousands enjoyed a secure downtown gathering. He also discussed rising youth conflicts involving firearms—he stressed that early intervention in the juvenile justice system will support at-risk youths.  Cville Right Now
