COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pen Park in Charlottesville will host a free Party in the Park event on April 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.—the celebration marks the opening of the only all-accessible playground and honors Bennett McClurken-Gibney, a young boy whose love for play inspired the project.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • University of Virginia students donated unused food service swipes to help fellow students get food through a Swipe Drive co-hosted by the UVA Food Pantry and UVA Dine — each swipe provided one pound of food as the academic year ended and surveys showed many students sometimes struggle to get a meal.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville City Council passed a resolution on Monday that begins the process to join the Biophilic Cities network—a group that shares ideas on using nature in city planning. • UVA submitted its application last Monday to buy the Federal Executive Institute property — the federal government is expected to decide on a buyer this coming Monday — and its Board of Visitors will meet Tuesday to decide if it can make the purchase. Charlottesville City Schools is also bidding on the site, planning to use it for a preschool and division offices.  3WV
  • Federal agents detained two men at the courthouse Tuesday morning, and local authorities said the sheriff's office and police were not notified until the agents entered the building (Homeland Security did not alert them in advance).  3WV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia’s Medicaid expansion covers 630,000 residents who rely on care for addiction and mental health—and cutting federal funds could end this coverage. Advocates and state lawmakers called on Congress at the General Assembly Building—urging them to keep the funding that many need.  The Daily Progress
  • Today is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in Charlottesville. Drop-off sites at Albemarle Police Headquarters, Wegmans, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital’s outpatient care center, Crozet Family Medicine and a drive-thru at the UVA Health Education Resource Center on Lee Street are open from 10:00 to 2:00 while year-round medication receptacles are available at eight UVA Health outpatient pharmacies.  3WV
  • The Center at Belvedere is partnering with the University of Virginia to screen the film Dottie — which helps healthcare workers understand dementia — and will host a question and answer session with the film's artistic director, Robin Marcotte.  Cville Right Now
