  • The Afton family placed a billboard along East High Street to share their son Tony Harvey’s story after he died in August 2024 from a fentanyl overdose. His parents hope his life and loss will serve as a warning for young people and help prevent addiction.  29 News

  • Florosa Bakery and Flowers celebrated a ribbon cutting (Tuesday, Apr. 28) after opening its shared space with Jbird Coffee about a month ago in Charlottesville. Owner Christina Martin blends Nicaraguan heritage with local ingredients to create unique pastries for the community.  29 News

  • Local radio host Anand Harsh highlights a busy week of live concerts at The Southern Café & Music Hall. College rock acts performed on Apr. 28, while Yarn is set to perform on Apr. 30 and local singer-songwriters will take the stage on May 1.  Cville Right Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Despite ongoing drought conditions, the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority reported its reservoir is nearly 95% full at 2.6 billion gallons because of infrastructure improvements made since the 2002 drought. Although residents currently use less water, usage at UVA is expected to rise soon.  29 News
  • The Regional Water Supply Agency says that Central Virginia’s water supply remains strong despite ongoing drought, and officials will continue monitoring levels to ensure water demand is met.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Courtney Jones, who donated part of her liver last December, met with Jenna Powell and her family at the UVA Health Transplant Center on Tuesday. The encounter let both families share gratitude and forge a lasting bond.  Cville Right Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Virginia’s lacrosse team beat Drexel 17-6 on Friday as coach Lars Tiffany said the team must work on its sliding and defense ahead of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte (he hopes injured players return soon to help win the ACC title).  The Cavalier Daily
  • Virginia Cavaliers won their second-straight ACC Championship in a golf tournament in Panama City, Fla after overcoming weather delays & stiff competition. The team will head to a regional event on May 18 as they prepare for the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad.  The Cavalier Daily
