  • The Center in Charlottesville will host Senior Safety Day on Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in partnership with the Charlottesville Albemarle TRIAD to share updated tips on fraud prevention, emergency preparedness, and safe driving for older adults—Melanie Benjamin stressed that learning the newest information is key to preventing scams.  Cville Right Now
  • Habitat for Humanity’s annual Women Build project is nearing its end after nearly two months when mostly women volunteers worked on building homes at the Southwood development — organizers reported wrapping up close to four houses while local realtors helped address Charlottesville's affordable housing challenge.  29 News
  • CASPCA, in partnership with FLOW Automotive and the Charlottesville Area SPCA, will host a Community Donation and Adoption Event during the third baseball game between UVA and Miami at Disharoon Park on May 11.   • Albemarle County Police said that proactive saturation patrols during the Cinco de Mayo holiday resulted in 26 traffic stops and 30 tickets for violations such as expired or counterfeit registrations, speeding, and cellphone use—actions aimed at reducing impaired driving risks.  Cville Right Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UVA Economics Professor Ed Burton told Morning News that the Fed took no action on rate cuts as treasury yields held steady and the jobs report did not show signs of a recession. He added that trade with China is beneficial—he expects the President to ease tariffs soon.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Albemarle County Office of Housing will accept applications for 50 housing voucher spots for the new Hickory Hope apartments in Southwood starting May 9 at 10 a.m. and closing May 16 at 4 p.m.—families will pay about 30% of their income toward rent while the office covers the rest, and the complex on Horizon Road will open in June.  29 News
  • Residents in Charlottesville are encouraged to check if they are owed money at the unclaimed property event on Friday, May 9—staffed mainly by a team of women working since March—to see if they can reclaim funds that might be theirs.  29 News
  • Albemarle County Supervisors approved a nearly $638-million fiscal 2026 budget Wednesday that includes a 4-cent real estate tax rate hike. The rate hike—of which 3.2 cents will fund public safety by paying for 6 new police officers per shift and covering salaries for 57 firefighters after federal grants ended—will lead to higher tax bills.  106.1 The Corner
