COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Homeless service providers presented the annual report on homelessness on May 4, showing a rise in cases and more seniors needing shelter. City Council and nonprofits are planning to turn an office building on Holiday Drive into Charlottesville’s first year-round, low-barrier shelter with phase one costing at least $10 million.  29 News
  • The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is hosting Stamp Out Hunger this Saturday as letter carriers will pick up non-perishable items from mailboxes to support residents facing food insecurity. Last year, carriers collected over 92,000 pounds of food (enough for 77,000 meals) to aid 171,000 monthly visitors.  3WV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Charlottesville’s Ix Arts Foundation and four marketing initiatives in Albemarle County were named as recipients of over $2 million in tourism grants to support local tourism and arts projects. Officials said the funds will boost community efforts.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A hands-on seminar to help caregivers learn to care for natural hair is set for May 17 at the Upscale Event Center in Charlottesville. The session, offered by HuMane Hair & Curls & Caregivers with grant support for foster and adoptive families, will provide step-by-step instruction.  29 News
  • U.Va. lost Canvas access Thursday afternoon due to a cybersecurity breach, prompting professors to email or share exam resources (finals conclude today). Faculty and IT are auditing access points while exams continue.  The Cavalier Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle Supervisors backed the Premier Circle supportive housing project with a 5-0 vote, granting a tax abatement to support the next phase that will build 60 affordable housing units based on local median income—building on 80 units that already help residents transition from being unhoused to more stable living situations.  Cville Right Now
  • Homeless service providers presented the annual State of Homelessness report Monday, May 4, showing documented cases rose to 703 while 335 remain unsheltered; city leaders plan to convert an office building on Holiday Drive into an 80-bed shelter with a Phase 1 budget of $10 million.  29 News
  • Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced on Thursday that over $6.5 million in grants were awarded through Virginia Tourism Corporation, including more than $120,000 for local tourism projects. The largest amounts went to the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau ($30,000 for a website redesign) and to Culpeper’s Tourism Economic Development ($30,000).  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA’s Remote Area Medical chapter provided $439,434 in free dental, vision and general health care to 560 people at its March clinic in Fishersville, which was the largest RAM event on the East Coast since 2019. A new clinic is planned for Augusta County in March 2027 (volunteer help needed).  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UVA Men’s Lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning the ACC championship this past weekend. They will host Georgetown on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Klockner as Coach Tiffany calls on fans to support the team.  29 News
  • In the Commonwealth Clash, the Cavaliers fell to third-seeded Virginia Tech 3-1, with Hokie junior Emma Mazzarone striking out 14, and Virginia will learn its next NCAA Regionals opponent at Selection Sunday while Tech faces Duke tomorrow.  The Cavalier Daily
