COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UVA rower Shelby Bavin, a volunteer firefighter and EMT at Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department (Station 8 in Albemarle County), was named captain of the 2025–2026 Allstate NACDA Spring Good Works Team for her community service. She said the honor surprised her and hopes it inspires others to serve.  29 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report shows that Afton Express, a regional transit service connecting Shenandoah Valley and Charlottesville, had record ridership by reaching 23,700 trips in 2025. The updated schedule plus savings, including about $5,500 and 174 hours annually, have boosted daily commutes.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVA President Scott Beardsley said a new strategic vision for the school is underway, with a listening tour gathering input from faculty, staff, students & community. The plan is expected to be complete in about a year and will focus on key areas like patient care, scholarships and sports.  Cville Right Now
  • United Way of Greater Charlottesville launches the Early Learning Career Launch program in partnership with UVA’s Pipelines and Pathways to offer 80 hours of paid training plus direct job opportunities in early childhood education. Applications for the June cohort are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, May 14.  29 News
  • The Albemarle County School Board will appoint new principals for Agnor Elementary and WAHS effective July 1. Catrina Sims will be promoted while Patricia Demitry, former head at William Monroe Middle, will lead at WAHS & support community learning.  Cville Right Now
  • Albemarle County Public Schools is expanding virtual mental health services into the summer to support students after school ends. The district partners with Cartwheel to connect families with licensed clinicians, with most major insurance plans accepted.  29 News
  • UVa and Charlottesville schools were hit by a data breach on May 11 that exposed personal information, and officials are investigating the incident to determine its full impact.  The Daily Progress
  • Jefferson Madison Regional Library has launched a Summer Reading Challenge that begins next month and invites community members of all ages to explore books. Registration opens on May 26, and participants can receive a free tote bag and additional prizes as they log reading minutes.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • VDH confirmed a measles case in a child 5-12 in Buckingham County and is watching for more unreported cases. Health officials advise residents to update their MMR vaccine and monitor for symptoms (fever, cough, and rash) while contacting a healthcare provider if they feel sick.  Cville Right Now
  • The Charlottesville Media Group is hosting its 11th annual 'Cares for Kids' radiothon today at 6 a.m. to raise funds for UVA Health Children’s care and upcoming ICU expansion (from 65 to 100 beds). Uplifting family stories will be shared over radio with donation options available by call, text, or online.  3WV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVA softball earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and is the No. 2-seed in the Knoxville Regional (they will face Indiana Friday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2). Men’s tennis beat South Carolina to reach the NCAA quarterfinals in Georgia while baseball stumbled against California.  Cville Right Now
