ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An Albemarle County 12-year-old went missing after being swept away in flood waters southwest of Crozet on Tuesday evening, last seen near Newtown Road (5:28 p.m.) and rescue crews (Virginia Conservation Police, Albemarle Fire Rescue, and Albemarle Police) were searching for the child by 8:00 p.m.  29 News

  • Three years after the UVa shooter, Christopher Jones Jr., texted his mentor to 'tell my story' minutes before he killed three students and hurt two others, the mentor Xavier G.   • Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns will appear at Monticello this summer—he is scheduled for a screening event at PVCC on July 3 and will serve as the keynote speaker at the 63rd Annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony on July 4 when more than 50 new citizens will take the oath.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia leaders approved new rules that will make SOL tests count for 10% of a student’s final grade and move testing to the last two weeks of the school year starting in 2026-27. The change will give teachers more time to teach and help parents understand test scores better—making the tests clearer.  The Daily Progress
  • The University of Virginia was surprised by a federal reversal that gave them the FEI property after Charlottesville City Public Schools had been awarded it on April 29—city officials expressed deep disappointment in the switch. Both groups had planned a joint application, but a private school, Community Christian Academy, applied over the weekend—its leader is now asking the Education Secretary for an explanation.  Cville Right Now

  • Sally Duncan has launched her campaign for the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors for the Jack Jouett Magisterial District seat in the June 17 primary.   • At Sojourners United Church of Christ, Pastor Karen Mann said the church remains a safe space for worship even as ICE raids in similar public areas raise concerns. She urged local officials to protect all residents after ICE detained two men at Albemarle County Courthouse in April.  29 News
