COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women United awarded $60,000 in grants to local nonprofits supporting women and children today — the awards aim to boost community services in the Charlottesville area.  CBS 19 News
  • Unused balloons from UVA's graduation are donated to the Children's Hospital to brighten patient rooms and bring a local boost to youth. The initiative repurposes graduation materials for community benefit.  CBS 19 News
  • No Kid Hungry Virginia is offering local summer food support for families as the school year ends and warmer weather approaches. The program helps ensure kids have access to nutritious meals during the break & aids community planning for the season.  CBS 19 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Virginia-based Dominion Energy agreed to merge with Florida-based NextEra Energy in an all-stock transaction that will create the world's largest regulated utility with about 10 million customer accounts across four states. The merger will support growing demand by financing 33 gigawatts of new power generation in the next 20 years.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MACAA opens a bilingual Early Learning Center at Hickory Hope in Southwood on August 1, offering affordable care for children 3 to 5 and free meals from New Hill Development Corporation (Beacon School Bitez). New leadership and local partnerships outfit classrooms to Montessori standards as the center seeks local teachers.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
  • UVA students will assist local businesses with AI this summer through the six-week AI4VA program that starts pairings tomorrow and work on projects from June 17 to July 29. The program provides 100 hours of training via Google’s AI Professional Certificate in collaboration with community partners (Chamber and local library).  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Last week, Charlottesville Media Group’s ‘Cares For Kids’ Radiothon raised $66,446 for UVA Health Children’s. The two-day event helped fund medical care and supportive services for children and families, including free and reduced-cost health services + lodging, food, clothing and transportation.  Cville Right Now
  • UVA Health launched its first virtual primary care service last week for insured Virginia adults, offering health visits Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Children over five will be seen starting July 1, and in person follow up is provided (patients without insurance may access help through special programs).  Cville Right Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Truitt Sunderland celebrated his final lacrosse Senior Day at Klöckner Stadium as teammates and family cherished four-year bonds despite modern sports including transfers and graduate players. Coach Tiffany stressed that long-term commitment helps keep traditions alive.  The Cavalier Daily
  • John Neal has led the Charlottesville High tennis program to state titles in 2024 and 2025 after stepping in during the spring 2020 season and he plans to keep coaching to build strong fundamentals and player bonds.  29 News

  • UVA announced Monday that lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany will not return after a decade that included national titles in 2019 and 2021. Tiffany texted Tuesday that he had already begun planning for the 2027 season after rumors about his departure.  3WV
  • Virginia men’s tennis captured its seventh NCAA title after a 4-3 win against Texas in Athens, Georgia on Sunday; coach Andres Pedroso praised team resilience and Dylan Dietrich's standout performance as match MVP.  Cville Right Now
