COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is asking the community for help feeding kittens because it is low on the powdered formula needed for bottle feeding young cats—93 cats were taken in in April and the shelter expects its intake to rise to between 600 and 1,000 during summer.  29 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Charlottesville and UVA Police are assisting Augusta County’s sheriff’s department to search Shenandoah Mountain for Scott Wayne Fitzgerald from Mount Sidney, who was last seen May 16 and whose vehicle was found on Route 250 west of Staunton—officials expect traffic delays near The Confederate Breast Works—more details will be shared as the search continues.  3WV

  • Three graduating fourth-year arts and entertainment writers shared how covering local art and cultural events changed their views on reporting while at the University. They described a shift from covering music to exploring theater and visual art—experiences that will guide their plans to remain active in the local arts scene after graduation.  The Cavalier Daily

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Triple-A predicts nearly 1.23 million Virginians will travel 50 miles or more over Memorial Day weekend from May 22 to May 26, with growth reaching 2.5 percent higher than last year. Economic concerns have kept holiday travel modest as most Virginians plan to drive to beaches, lakes, mountains, or other local attractions for the start of summer.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albemarle County Fire Rescue is highlighting mental health support for first responders during Mental Health Awareness Month by wearing green shirts every Friday — a visual reminder that resources are available. Deputy Chief Heather Childress said the department offers a peer support team, an embedded clinician, and regular training to help first responders manage work-related stress and personal challenges.  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville has set up speed cameras at Buford Middles, Johnson and Summit Elementary Schools to protect students during school arrival and dismissal times. For now, drivers speeding in these zones get warnings—officials will later impose a $100 fine if speeds exceed the limit by 11 mph.  29 News
  • The University of Virginia has joined a state group led by Governor Youngkin in the VIN Hub, a $1.2 million project that funds a $750,000 planning study for a micro-scale reactor and a $462,000 center for nuclear materials work — aiming to boost in-state nuclear expertise and workforce training. The effort also brings Virginia Tech, VCU, and Liberty into the project to further strengthen local research and innovation.  Cville Right Now
