COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women United awarded $60,000 in grants to 10 local nonprofits that support women and children in Charlottesville, with awards ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 (funding services such as self-defense classes, food assistance, and support for new moms).   • Jaunt unveiled a new logo and visual identity that reflects its core mission of people, service & connection after 50 years of service. The public transportation provider launched the update on its first nine buses and invites riders to share photos on social media.  29 News

  • Today at Vault, members of the Infamous Stringdusters will perform in Falco and Book Play Garcia; AfroAsia & Prabir Trio will play on May 22 at Ting Pavilion, and on May 24, MWC & The Cheap Suits with 7th Grade Girl Fight will perform at Infinite Repeats.  Cville Right Now
  • The Chihamba African American Cultural Arts Ball and Festival is set to return this summer in Charlottesville, offering local residents art and cultural performances. Organizers will release details on schedules and venues soon.  29 News
  • Irish Exit and Lucky Number, two student bands at the University, are disbanding as graduating members shift to new careers while planning future reunions; remaining students intend to form fresh groups to preserve Charlottesville’s vibrant campus music culture.  The Cavalier Daily
  • City Council approved a resolution to use all city parks for the Swords into Plowshares project that will transform melted metal from the former Lee statue into public art (three design teams have proposed ideas for parks such as Market Street and Tonsler) with community engagement to follow.  3WV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVA softball ended its season in Knoxville after a 5-1 loss to Tennessee on Sunday, and baseball now enters today's ACC tournament in Charlotte as the No.8 seed following a split final series in Louisville. UVA athletic teams showed mixed results over the weekend.  3WV
  • Piedmont Area Tennis Association received a USTA grant to support its Wheelchair Tennis Program that runs tournaments, camps, and adaptive tennis events at Boar's Head Resort. The grant will cover expenses for accessible court time and lodging for out-of-town players.  Cville Right Now
