Good morning, Charlottesville. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 21st of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday night at about 8 p.m. on Hardy Drive, officers on foot heard shots and arrested two men — 21-year-old Tyshawn Davis-Lee from Charlottesville and 23-year-old Priayer Emerson from Albemarle County — after recovering two handguns and several shell casings.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blue Ridge Area Food Bank leaders warned that a House budget bill may cut SNAP benefits—estimated at $250 to $300 billion over the next decade, which could remove vital support from children, seniors, and veterans. They said a 10-percent cut could double demand on the already strained food bank system that sees about 172,000 guest visits every month.  3WV
  • City Council will consider a $50 million renovation of the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail — a proposal protesters denounce — as local leaders debate the project's cost and priorities.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Advocates warn that if Congress reduces Medicaid funding, central Virginians could lose vital mental health and addiction recovery services that many community providers rely on. Local nonprofits say the cuts will strain resources and force service boards to care for more patients with limited funds – a change that may reverse improvements seen in recent years.  Charlottesville Tomorrow
