- ➤ The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is running low on kitten milk replacer and canned kitten food as more young cats are brought in this season — the shelter welcomes donations of food, kibble, bedding, and bottles to support care efforts. 29 News
- ➤ Volunteers gathered at Monticello Memory Garden to place American flags by veterans' graves ahead of Memorial Day to honor local heroes (a cherished community tradition). 29 News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Service Dogs of Virginia hosted an Art Unleashed preview on Tuesday, May 19 at (Oakencroft Farm and Winery) where community partners showcased 20 hand-painted dog sculptures that will be displayed in Charlottesville from June through October (to fund a new campus) before being auctioned. 29 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eleven high school students were honored tonight as 2026 recipients of the renewable Charlottesville Scholarship Program, which has supported 223 students in 25 years. They will get scholarship funds each year if they keep good grades and work with a community navigator (mentor) to build their careers. Cville Right Now
- ➤ Epsilon Eta, the University’s environmental fraternity, builds student bonds on campus through cleanup drives, career workshops and social mixers. New students can explore joining via upcoming rush events, including a picnic on the Lawn and a bouquet-making session in the fall and spring. The Cavalier Daily

- ➤ Charlottesville homeowners now face steep property tax hikes as rising home values nearly triple over the past decade — one Ridge Street home now carries a $9,000 tax bill compared to about $3,200 in 2015. Councilor Michael Payne said the city’s increased revenue has not eased cost pressures for long-time residents. 29 News
- ➤ Preservation Virginia today added Valley Link's proposed $1 billion Joshua Falls-Yeat Transmission Line Project to its 2026 list of endangered historic places. The 115-mile route from Campbell to Culpeper could spark local legal challenges as officials weigh the project's impact on historic sites. 29 News

- ➤ At Tuesday's Board Architectural Review meeting near West Main, residents opposed LV Collective’s revised plan for luxury student housing scaled from 11 stories to 8 and 6 on Westhaven.
