EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charlottesville Education Association and City Schools settled their dispute after a Feb. 6 message harmed union trust — the board acknowledged that its communication hurt the union and moved to repair the relationship with its staff.  Cville Right Now
  • The Albemarle County Rotary Club awarded scholarships to college students in Charlottesville—recognizing academic achievement and community leadership. The awards support higher education and honor local talent.  29 News
  • Former Virginia defensive lineman Chris Long visited Scottsville Elementary earlier this month to launch EdZone’s new school partnership with Charlottesville City Schools. His foundation provided a $7,000 grant to boost at-home libraries with new, grade-level curated books for the students.  Cville Right Now
  • Students from a Charlottesville middle school presented policy ideas on eviction reform and homelessness to Councilor Lloyd Snook and other decision makers today, sparking local civic engagement.  29 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local reservoirs remain nearly 100 percent full as extreme drought spreads to Buckingham, Nelson, Fluvanna, and southern Albemarle (agricultural impacts are already felt) while RWSA monitors low stream flows and warns that prolonged dry weather could trigger water restrictions.  3WV
  • Mint Springs Valley Park lake is closed for swimming until further notice because of a harmful algae bloom, though the park remains open for hiking, fishing, and boating (swimmers can use Chris Green Lake and Walnut Creek parks instead).  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is running USDA’s Summer Food Service Program from May 26 through early August to serve 550 kids free breakfasts and lunches at local churches, summer programs, and rural meal sites (some sites require registration while others do not).  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville Ballet instructors travel to local senior centers and assisted living facilities in Central Virginia to lead dance sessions for Parkinson’s patients. The program builds strength and community connection.  CBS 19 News
  • The UVA Health System (with support from the Charlottesville Police Department and Parks and Recreation) is hosting Healthy Streets, Healthy People Fair at Washington Park on Saturday, May 30.  CBS 19 News
  • VDH launched a measles dashboard as the Commonwealth reported 40 cases this year, mostly among the unvaccinated. The health department noted a Buckingham outbreak (17 cases) amid ongoing monitoring.  CBS 19 News
