CRIME NEWS

  • Kevin Cox, known for his pedestrian advocacy, used chalk to mark a temporary crosswalk at Elliot Avenue and Second Street Southeast after his calls for a proper crosswalk following a fatal accident in October 2024 went unanswered—he later self-reported to police and now faces misdemeanor vandalism charges with his first court appearance expected Tuesday in General District Court.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Charlottesville hosts a variety of events— the Arts Festival runs Saturday and Sunday with over 50 artists, the City Market opens Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 100 East Water Street, Biscuit Run Park features over eight miles of trails on 1,190 acres, and city pools open free Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Today, Monticello begins its Founding Friends, Founding Foe Tour from 4:30 to 7 p.m. with tickets at $75 for adults and $45 for students.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eleven seniors in Charlottesville have been awarded scholarships and mentorship through a local program—an opportunity they say means a lot to them. The mentorship will continue during the school year to help these students prepare for college and future careers.  29 News

  • Albemarle County will open its new courthouse on June 23 with the general district court & Commonwealth’s Attorney offices inside; the building was designed to fix security issues by separating public access from secure areas & ensuring better safety during court sessions.  29 News
  • Charlottesville City Council approved the $49 million jail expansion plan after sending bids out for construction, and work will begin in August. Opponents, including civil rights organizer Harold Folley and the People’s Coalition, protested the high cost—arguing that funds could benefit social services—and plan to return for public comment on June 2.  The Daily Progress
