COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The fifth annual Healthy Streets Healthy People event takes place Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Booker T. Washington Park, featuring more than 50 organizations offering free health and safety trainings (including CPR, Narcan, and gun safety) along with community games, music, and giveaways for families.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Walker Upper Elementary School (38 years as a fifth and sixth grade institution) will become the new Charlottesville Early Learning Center for preschool students starting next school year; minor renovations will take place this summer to support the change.  29 News
  • Albemarle County Public Schools has named Erica Broudy as the new principal of Greer Elementary School, and she will begin her role soon.  CBS 19 News
  • Over 100 educators met yesterday at Piedmont Virginia Community College to discuss how to improve disability access in higher education and standardize application processes for students. The sessions cost 145 dollars and registration is closed for Friday while a national conference is scheduled for late July.  29 News
  • More than 100 educators gathered in Charlottesville on May 28 at Piedmont Virginia Community College to work on improving access for disabled students in higher education. Attendees paid ($145) to attend sessions on ADA compliance and standardizing school intake processes.  29 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 2.5 inches of rain fell between Friday and Wednesday in Albemarle County and Charlottesville, temporarily easing drought conditions that have stressed summer crops (meteorologist Tyler Roys said rainfall remains below the normal total). Forecasts indicate drier weather will return later as evaporation increases.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arron Arreguin will serve as the school resource officer at the high school and Tyree Kirby will work at the middle school for the 2026–27 school year, following a March 2025 board vote and community discussions on bringing back the program (CCS and CPD teamed up to resume SRO placements).  Cville Right Now
  • Motorcycle officers from 17 Police Departments are competing in the Jefferson Area Motor Squad Police Motorcycle Skills Training Seminar at the Sam's Club parking lot, with competitions taking place today and tomorrow. Organized by JAMS, the event supports the UVA Health Children’s Hospital Child Life Program and helps officers learn safer riding techniques.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • As summer begins, safety officials in Albemarle County warn families about the danger of leaving children and pets in hot cars (a risk that grows with rising temperatures) and urge them to take precautions.  CBS 19 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kevin Cassese became the new head coach for UVA Men’s Lacrosse and told the community today that the transition feels very emotional. He will lead the team as they prepare for upcoming games.  29 News
