  • Charlottesville will unveil honorary street signs today at 3 p.m. on West Main Street to honor Melvin Eugene Walker, the local entrepreneur who ran Mel’s Cafe for 39 years — a cherished community hub.  29 News
  • The lake at Mint Springs Valley Park reopens today for swimmers after harmful algae levels led to a closure.  29 News

  • Augusto Rodriguez Araoz opened The Enemy last month at York Place on the Downtown Mall, featuring a short seasonal menu of European + Argentinean dishes. Reservations are available Tuesday through Saturday from 5-9 p.m. at 112 West Main St.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albemarle County Public Schools named Erica Broudy as the new principal of Greer Elementary, effective July 1. She comes from the Virginia Department of Education and will work with teachers and families to boost student support.  29 News
  • Albemarle County Public Schools announced Erica Broudy as Greer Elementary’s new principal; she will begin on July 1 (after serving as a regional student success coordinator at the Virginia Department of Education) and looks forward to supporting students and families.  29 News
  • Free Stick & Move Day Camp returns June 1–3 to train students in grades 3–8 with basketball, boxing and nutrition education at Wartime Fitness (1147 River Road, Suite 3). Organized by Legacy Driven Training, Wartime Fitness Warriors and Toyota Charlottesville, the camp builds teamwork, discipline and confidence.  29 News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Fitch Ratings affirmed UVA's AAA credit rating + all three major rating agencies confirmed the university's top-tier financial standing.  CBS 19 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews (working under city management) are repairing the Downtown Mall with fixes to sidewalks and drainage while closing 2nd and 4th streets to drivers. The work will finish by the end of June before the 50th anniversary celebration on July 3.  29 News
  • Betty Thraves has worked nearly 60 years in the former Lane High School building — where she began as a student — and now serves Albemarle County with pride. At 88, she keeps the historic building alive in the community.  29 News
  • A local investigation found that tenants at Park’s Edge in Albemarle County face mold, floods, and poor maintenance as Virginia law offers few protections — contributing to unsafe homes. Local officials and advocates are now discussing rental inspection programs to better hold landlords accountable.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVA Health launched a hospital-based violence intervention program in April to help patients injured by community violence; the program hired two specialists to provide follow-up care & emotional support at the hospital in Charlottesville.  106.1 The Corner
