COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members gathered Saturday, May 30 on West Main to unveil an honorary street sign dedicated to Melvin Eugene Walker—owner of the beloved Mel’s Cafe who made a lasting impact on the area. Two signs now mark the new Mel’s Walk.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Faculty Senate released a report from exit interviews with 46 departing faculty after the 2025-26 academic year. The report, discussed at the Faculty Life Committee meeting on April 29, showed high teaching satisfaction — 43 percent rated the experience excellent — and noted concerns over low pay and leadership.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The Contemplative Sciences Center marked its first academic year of success at the Contemplative Commons, hosting expanded mindfulness events and research programs from yoga sessions to guided writing. Starting in fall, the building will operate seven days a week with new community programming planned for summer and the fall semester.  The Cavalier Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • Navani, a stray puppy shot in the head, is receiving surgery and ongoing care at CASPCA today; her treatment cost $8,000 from the shelter’s medical fund + Animal Control is investigating her case.  29 News
  • UVA Health launches a violence intervention program at its University Medical Center today to help lower repeat injuries among patients recovering from community violence. The program, supported by two grants, aids physical and mental recovery and has served 40 patients so far.  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tonsler League returns for its fifth season at Tonsler Park with basketball games, food trucks, and local vendors. The summer event will see 12 teams compete, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 9 (winners will earn a $5,000 prize).  29 News
  • The Virginia baseball season ended Sunday as the Cavaliers were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a 7-6 loss to Jacksonville State after trailing 7-0 and rallying in the eighth inning, finishing with a 37-23 record under coach Chris Pollard.  3WV
  • Virginia’s men’s lacrosse team named Kevin Cassese head coach after a nine-day saga following Lars Tiffany’s non-renewal. Cassese, who was promoted Tuesday and held a press conference Wednesday, vowed to lead the team with commitment, discipline & selflessness as they work to compete for championships.  The Cavalier Daily
