COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two summer meals programs that help children get nutritious food will start on June 15. The Sun Bucks program gives families an extra $120 for groceries that can be matched at local farmers' markets while the Sun Meals program offers lunch with no paperwork required.  29 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Devils Backbone permanently closed its taproom on West Main Street after its planned reopening was canceled last year. The brewery is now focusing on its Basecamp in Nelson County and its Lexington Outpost Taproom & Kitchen.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The weekly events calendar spotlights local music shows—Twitty & Lynn will perform at Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro on June 6 and Spacey Jane with Toledo at Jefferson Theater on June 7, and Brett Dennen will celebrate 106.1 The Corner’s 20 years in a Sept 26 show at Vault Virginia.  106.1 The Corner
  • The inaugural Charlottesville Jazz Festival will kick off Thursday on the Downtown Mall — it will feature live performances and food vendors that promise a day of community celebration.  29 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the city is flushing and inspecting hydrants for safe emergency use + crews work across neighborhoods; residents may see temporarily cloudy water as sediment clears + water remains safe to drink.  29 News
  • Del. Amy Laufer remains determined to reintroduce her mattress recycling bill after Gov. Spanberger vetoed it, saying mattresses occupy 400% more space in landfills and take over 100 years to decompose. She plans to work on new amendments when the Assembly reconvenes for its special budget session later this month.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • VDH is investigating a measles exposure at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital (Richmond) that occurred May 20-24. Health officials advise anyone who was present to check their vaccination status and monitor for symptoms through June 14.  Cville Right Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Residents at Park’s Edge in Albemarle County report ongoing flooding, fire hazards and pest infestations that have left them stuck in unsafe apartments—maintenance complaints have not been promptly addressed, leaving few housing alternatives.  Charlottesville Tomorrow

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local chef Brice Cunningham (of Fleurie, Petit Pois, and Tempo) is training to sail his 21-foot yacht in the 2027 Mini Transat. He will begin the race next September from La Rochelle, France, racing toward Salvador de Bahia, Brazil with qualifying legs that include a 1,000-mile course to Ireland.  Cville Right Now
  • Former UVA tennis player Rafael Jodar advances to the French Open quarterfinals today at Roland Garros — he faces Alexander Zverev after four straight wins. Local rowers finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in Georgia and Virginia wrestlers placed in the top five at national events in Ohio.  Cville Right Now
