EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Buford Middle School cleared out old desks, chairs and bookshelves—sending them to students in need in Sierra Leone and Newport News—as renovations begin to modernize the school for fall. 29 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Emmet Street in Charlottesville between Stadium Road and Jefferson Park Avenue will close—effective next Monday for more than two months. The Daily Progress
- ➤ Albemarle County is asking for public feedback on its plan to assign a dedicated school resource officer to each of its three high schools for the upcoming school year—officials have sent a survey to gather feedback on experiences and suggestions to guide the program. Cville Right Now
- ➤ The City of Charlottesville will use $8.7 million from its surplus CIP funds to improve the Downtown Mall with a new long-term restroom solution and a two-year cleaning pilot—Council will vote on this plan on June 16. City Manager Sam Sanders said the funds come from a $22 million budget surplus and may shift if federal dollars are lost. 29 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A researcher at the University of Virginia found that HIV drugs called NRTIs—such as Epivir—may help prevent Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and eye diseases by keeping overactive protein complexes in check. The findings will lead to clinical trials that test the safety and effectiveness of these treatments as new options for patients. The Daily Progress
- ➤ UVA Health’s Dr. Caroline Hinkle joined Morning News during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month to explain that early signs of dementia include repeated questions, losing items and getting lost plus she recommended regular exercise, social engagement and learning new skills to protect brain health. She added that treatment options include oral medications and infusion therapies and said that UVA offers a full range of support services for individuals needing evaluation. Cville Right Now
