CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia state trooper Logan Pingley has been charged with issuing a threat — he left a pair of disturbing notes on an Albemarle County woman's doorstep.  The Daily Progress
  • Batesville man Craig Thomas Handley, 74, entered an Alford plea for a felony shooting charge from a vehicle after a neighbor dispute on Aug. 28—he maintained his innocence and was released under house arrest while other charges were dropped.  The Daily Progress

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tom Chapman stepped down as executive director of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society after five years of reviving the organization—passing leadership to Olivia Brown last month. Brown now leads the society and plans to expand its education programs and secure more funding—efforts aimed at preserving local history and engaging the community.  The Daily Progress

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVa closed several classrooms at its Earhart Street Child Development Center after a new certificate reduced room capacity on May 28, displacing 39 children whose parents quickly secured backup care. The university will fully close the center when the new Rivanna Child Development Center opens late June or early July—most staff will start with Bright Horizons on June 29.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville City Council will vote on June 16 on spending $8.7 million from the Capital Improvement Program Contingency Fund to upgrade the downtown mall ahead of its 50th anniversary next year. The plan includes $1 million for improvements such as new public restrooms at a $280,000 cost, brick repairs estimated at $350,000, planned lighting upgrades, and a future ambassador program to assist visitors—aiming to enhance the mall’s safety and appeal.  3WV
  • After more than 280 residents signed a petition, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors on June 4th split their vote on a request to fill 1.5 acres of floodplain connected to Moore’s Creek for the Woolen Mills Industrial Park project—neighbors said filling the land would block road access. The tied vote denied the permit—keeping the floodplain unchanged.  29 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local radiothon raised $60,000 on June 5 to help improve care at UVA Health Children's. The donation will expand neonatal and pediatric intensive care, support research and family assistance, and boost cardiology and cancer treatment—ensuring better care for young patients.  29 News
