- ➤ Eleanor Hunton Hoppe was sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison for planning to abuse a young girl after exchanging explicit images online—she must also register as a sex offender for 25 years. 29 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Albemarle County Public Schools has named Nancy McCullen as principal at Baker-Butler Elementary starting July 1 and Dr. Seth Kennard as principal for Mountain View Upper Elementary beginning in the 2026-27 school year. - ➤ The University of Virginia Board of Visitors pledged to advance free inquiry and viewpoint diversity as it rolled out new initiatives after a Justice Department accusation of failing to dismantle DEI efforts. The board discussed improving faculty hiring and academic balance, and President Jim Ryan said more talks about these changes will come in the future. 29 News

- ➤ Albemarle County is updating its rules for data centers and will hold a virtual lunch session on June 16 at noon and a public meeting on June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.—county staff are studying how these facilities might affect water, energy and local growth while inviting residents to share their views. - ➤ Local health officials confirmed a second measles case in Charlottesville in a child aged 0–4 following exposure to a previous case and began tracking contacts to advise vaccination needs. They recommend that anyone who visited exposure sites (SugarBear Ice Cream on May 31 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Lowe’s Home Improvement on June 1 between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.) check their immunization status and contact a doctor if needed. - ➤ UVA Health will host a conference June 9-10 to help families with rare diseases get clearer answers — the event is organized by Olivia’s Light, an organization started by parents who lost their daughter to a rare condition. 29 News
