- ➤ The iconic rock band Heart will perform at JPJ on October 19 and tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 18—this marks their return after getting back together early last year. 3WV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At a board meeting Friday, Wise officials updated on enrollment growth and programs as Chancellor Donna Price Henry reported that student numbers jumped from roughly 500 to 600 and 97 students signed up for the Year in Wise program that lets waitlisted students attend for one year before transferring to Charlottesville. Faculty representative Karen Carter detailed orientation successes, upcoming graduate programs and housing challenges that led to converting common spaces — which drives plans for additional housing. - ➤ On Thursday, the Academic and Student Life Committee met and heard Interim Provost Brie Gertler explain that the University faces challenges with accreditation—such as potential loss of federal funding and the rise of generative AI—and will focus on expanding student internships. Student leaders and Coach Ryan Odom shared their experiences, and the committee approved measures including the Miller Professorship and renaming the Center of Studies in Venice and Vicenza. - ➤ The Buildings and Grounds Committee approved changes to the 2025 Major Capital Plan that bring its total cost to $1.85 billion by removing three projects and deferring 12 because of low funding. The Committee also backed 11 new projects—including extra planning for the Center for the Arts, demolishing the unused Center for Teaching Excellence building, and naming a dining space at the Forum Hotel—to meet the University's needs. - ➤ Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears revived her campaign promise to end the car tax in a speech during a training session last Tuesday — a pledge echoed by gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, who said she would work with lawmakers to repeal the tax and offer relief to local workers. - ➤ UVA Health dermatologist Dr. Mark Russell said not all sunscreens protect the skin equally as some chemical versions may cause irritation or be absorbed into the body. He advised residents to use water resistant mineral sunscreens — which sit on top of the skin — and cover all exposed areas to lower the risk of skin cancer. 29 News
- ➤ Health officials confirmed that two of the three measles cases in Virginia have been reported in Charlottesville. The Daily Progress
