CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg early Saturday near Downtown Mall, and police arrested 34-year-old Lorenzo McAllister on charges including reckless handling of a firearm—police have increased their presence around the area amid a trend of shooting incidents.  3WV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville Police Department will host its first-ever gun buyback event at Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church on Friday, June 20 from 10AM to 2PM—gift cards will be offered based on the type of returned firearm, and no ID is needed.  3WV
  • Governor Youngkin signed a bill on Friday that makes drug dealers who distribute fentanyl liable for manslaughter if someone dies, a move aimed at reducing overdose deaths. The measure passed the General Assembly & is part of a broader effort led by Attorney General Jason Miyares to lower fentanyl-related fatalities.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new report by the Environmental Working Group found one in four sunscreens may not protect as well as they claim—UVA Health dermatologist Dr. Mark Russell said chemical sunscreens can irritate the skin while mineral sunscreens may leave a white cast. He noted that sunscreen rules have not been updated since 1999, raising concerns about safety for people and the environment.  3WV
  • A UVA audiologist advises Charlottesvillians to protect their hearing this summer by using high-quality earplugs and monitoring headphone volumes since loud events like concerts and marching bands can quickly cause noise-induced hearing loss (concerts can reach dangerous levels in minutes).   • University of Virginia scientists have discovered that small changes in the Rev and RRE regulatory system affect how HIV hides from treatment and may help lead to new therapies aimed at fully clearing the virus. Their study, published in PLOS Pathogens, provides critical insight for future HIV treatments.  Cville Right Now
  • UVA Health will launch a national program for Ehlers-Danlos syndromes—a group of connective tissue disorders that cause joint, skin, and vascular problems—using a $3 million donation to build coordinated care at 500 Ray C. Hunt Drive in Fontaine Research Park. The program will open in late 2025 or early 2026 and will bring together experts to help patients in Charlottesville and beyond.  Cville Right Now
