Good morning, Charlottesville. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 19th of June.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Center at Belvedere in Charlottesville is raffling a quilt to raise funds for upgrades to its performing arts auditorium—Executive Director Melanie Benjamin said the room’s bounce makes it unsuitable for music performances. It will match a $25,000 grant from the Perry Foundation with community contributions as tickets cost $5 each or three for $10.  Cville Right Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UVA Economics Professor Ed Burton said there will be no Fed action today because Treasury bill rates have not dropped below 4.25% — a key rate he noted — while rising tensions in the Middle East and a Senate spending bill could put the economy at risk.  Cville Right Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the M-Cubed Academy began its two-week summer program at Journey Middle School to help Black seventh and eighth grade students from Charlottesville and Albemarle County build math skills and self-confidence—linking lessons in math with Juneteenth history. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Jail Superintendent Martin Kumar said changes in the renovation project are underway to reduce English Construction's bid from $53 million to a $49-million budget. He said the plan retains the 2000 upgrade while removing unused 1975 sections—financing was approved by Charlottesville and Albemarle this week with Nelson County expected to approve next week.  3WV
  • Charlottesville Police Chief Mike Kochis has stopped using Peregrine after community complaints and has limited the Flock camera system to local use only—its data now stays with city personnel—while saying the systems may be reconsidered in the future. This decision comes as the department addresses public concerns about data protection and technology usage.  3WV
  • Albemarle County said its Wednesday Board of Supervisors meeting will not have a live stream due to system limits after a cyberattack. The county restored internet but will continue troubleshooting challenges with public resources—like GIS Web—over the next several weeks.  3WV
  • Charlottesville Police Department will host its first-ever gun buyback program tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church, where firearms are collected in exchange for gift cards—aiming to remove illegal guns even as experts say buybacks rarely lower crime rates.  The Daily Progress
  • Political newcomer Jen Fleisher, a Blue Ridge Health District health worker, led the city's first ranked-choice primary for two open Council seats by earning roughly 51% of the votes (3,108 ballots) on Tuesday night. Incumbent Mayor Wade received 36% (2,216 votes) and Vice Mayor Pinkston got 13% (823 votes); final numbers will be confirmed Sunday after all provisional and late absentee ballots are counted.  29 News
