COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlottesville Parks & Rec will host free community activities on June 21 as part of Play All Day VA. The program includes free swimming at Washington Park Pool and Onesty Family Aquatic Center plus free admission to Carver, Herman Key Jr., Smith Aquatic and Fitness, Tonsler, and Crow Recreation Centers and special events like a field day at Tonsler Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., a live DJ with Kona Ice from 5 to 7 p.m., and Swimming Under the Stars from 7 to 9 p.m.  29 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Charlottesville is observing the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth with community events today at Eastwood Farm and Winery, Historic River View Farm and The Art Bar that celebrate local Black heritage, music & food. A parade and festival will kick off Saturday morning at the Jefferson School City Center with over 400 participants & local vendors expected to join in the festivities.  The Cavalier Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two UVa alumni groups are clashing over President Jim Ryan's leadership as the Jefferson Council wants him out while Wahoos4UVa defends his record, arguing that he has guided the school through recent troubles. The fight centers on issues like problems at UVa Health System and campus crises (Ryan’s contract runs until July 31), with neither side offering new steps toward a resolution.  The Daily Progress

  • Charlottesville Police Chief Mike Kochis said he paused the Peregrine system approved by City Council after concerns over data access emerged—locking Flock camera data to CPD only. He noted the pilot program may resume later if the integration issues can be resolved.  Cville Right Now
  • At Wednesday’s meeting, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors approved regional jail renovation funding and a 3% pay raise for county officials and board members + acquired two land parcels on Dominion Drive via eminent domain for sidewalk improvements. Supervisors noted the steps aim to keep the project within budget and prevent delays.  3WV
  • Charlottesville hosted a gun buyback program on June 19 to allow residents to dispose of unwanted firearms safely.  The Daily Progress
