  • Michelle Moshier is a Charlottesville tennis pro and restaurant manager who is fighting her third bout of Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer while facing fertility challenges and the early birth of twins due to high blood pressure as she raises her three children. She and her wife Alex de Guzman—a former tennis star now running a local training center—have legally adopted their children to ensure both share equal parental rights and support each other through these challenges.  The Daily Progress
  • UVA alumni and volunteers cleared trails and fixed wobbly structures as part of Cavaliers Care worldwide service weekend to prepare Camp Holiday Trails for opening day—efforts that will provide a safe place for children with medical needs and their siblings to play this summer.  29 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Albemarle County resident Austin Lilly, 23, faces 18 charges after he led a 128 mph high-speed chase on I‑64 on May 2—his pursuit ended with severe vehicle damage and initiated preconviction probation with a counseling component.  The Daily Progress

  • Formerly incarcerated advocates in Charlottesville pushed for reform as they shared personal and family experiences with the justice system—urging officials to build people rather than cages.  29 News
  • Charlottesville police completed its first gun buyback on Friday, June 20 when more than 100 firearms were turned in at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church—residents received gift cards based on the type of gun. Police Chief Michael Kochis said the campaign removes unwanted guns from homes—though experts say buybacks may not lower gun violence.  The Daily Progress
