COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new nonprofit called the Strength Initiative gives Charlottesville women a safe space to build strength and confidence in the gym. Founded by Dr. Evelyn Frazier at 232 Douglas Ave. in the Belmont neighborhood, the group offers pay-what-you-can classes and free community events—including a small-group senior program— to help women of all ages get stronger.  The Daily Progress

CRIME NEWS

  • A victim was taken to UVA early Wednesday morning (around 12:15 a.m.) after shots were fired on 7 1/2 Street south of Cherry Avenue and CPD is investigating the incident.  3WV
  • On July 8, a Craigsville man named Jonathen Lee Powell, 36, was arrested after a chase on I-81 that started with a call about a larceny in Craigsville — he intentionally hit VSP cruisers with his stolen vehicle and now faces charges including grand larceny, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony eluding, and assault & battery.  3WV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary in Shipman cares for abandoned and injured wild animals and treats about 200 animals daily from nearly 1,000 cases each year—without state or federal funding. Executive director Sarah Cooperman said anyone who finds an injured or abandoned animal should call the sanctuary for proper help.  Cville Right Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Monday night’s City Council meeting, Councilor Michael Payne explained the city’s climate action plan using $1 million annual investments for solar panel installations and weatherization programs while describing the six-member ANCHOR team's work on mental health call responses. Community members voiced worry over federal cuts in healthcare and food assistance programs—councilors said more funding will be needed—prompting plans to protect affected residents.  Cville Right Now
  • VDOT said that starting July 23, crews will begin a five-month project to build a new roundabout at the busy intersection of Crozet Avenue, Rockfish Gap Turnpike, and Browns Gap Turnpike. During this time, a part of Route 680 will be closed and separate detour routes for cars and trucks — cars will use Crozet Avenue to Old Three Notches Road and trucks will follow Crozet Avenue to Route 810 — will be in force until December, weather permitting.  3WV
  • Charlottesville is in legal limbo over its zoning rules—frozen rezoning applications stop new changes while building permits still follow the old code. Neil Williamson of the Free Enterprise Forum said national developers worry that legal challenges may stall local plans for a walkable, mixed-income community and noted local elections and a regional water supply plan are also under discussion.  Cville Right Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Broadcasters for Blood drive organized by the Red Cross collected 225 blood donations that helped local hospitals and touched 225 lives in the community. Local broadcasters and volunteers backed the event, and both longtime and first-time donors showed strong support for this life-saving effort.  3WV
