CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Albemarle County Police Department and FBI arrested 20-year-old Zaquan J. Thorne of Charlottesville and a 16-year-old juvenile during a Project Safe Neighborhoods Operation that began Tuesday, July 22 and ended early Wednesday, July 23 after a traffic stop revealed they carried firearms, drugs, and ammunition—Thorne faces charges for possession offenses and is held without bond while the juvenile faces charges as a minor. 3WV

- ➤ Charlottesville and Albemarle schools said the federal government is holding back about $417,000 and $660,000—funds used for Title programs like English learner services and teacher training—and have set contingency plans to keep these services running; school officials urged community members to contact their federal representatives to share their concerns if the cuts become permanent. 3WV

- ➤ Tuesday saw fraternity bikers from Western Kentucky University’s Phi Gamma Delta ride near University of Virginia Grounds during their 10-week Bike4Alz trek, which has raised nearly $100,000 for Alzheimer’s research. The riders will make two more stops before ending their journey at the Virginia Beach boardwalk—donating funds to the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association. 29 News
- ➤ The Center at Belvedere runs indoor fitness classes and other events that help over 2,200 members stay active and connected during hot summer days.
