- ➤ Earlier this month, the Visiting Angels Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to cover memberships for 19 seniors at the Center at Belvedere — a community center just north of Charlottesville that offers many programs and services for active seniors. The Daily Progress
- ➤ The Louisa County Animal Shelter is at critically full capacity and asks the community for help by fostering, adopting, and reporting lost animals instead of immediately bringing them in. The shelter offers free adoptions for animals that are vaccinated and spayed or neutered and welcomes visits Tuesday—Saturday between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. at 18 Sacred Heart Avenue. 3WV

- ➤ On July 25th, Meraki started the show at 5:30 p.m. and New Boss followed, completing the evening's performance. 29 News
- ➤ Yesterday, the free concert series Fridays After Five was held at the Ting Pavilion downtown where local band Meraki started at 5:30 p.m. followed by New Boss, who played a set that showcased their local roots. 29 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Charlottesville is in planning limbo — a court ruling on June 30 struck down the new zoning ordinance and left developers and city officials uncertain about future projects. The Board of Architectural Review canceled its July 15 meeting and plans to reschedule in August — a delay that could affect nearly $390 million in planned developments. The Daily Progress
- ➤ University of Virginia leaders announced on Friday the formation of a special committee—including students, faculty, staff, alumni and Board of Visitors members—to help choose the 10th president. The committee will hold its first meeting in August and host town halls in Charlottesville and other locations as it gathers community input for its nationwide search. Cville Right Now
- ➤ At a City Council meeting on July 21, Director of Transit Garland Williams said CAT ridership is rising—yet it remains below pre-pandemic levels as riders still face delays with on-time performance at 68%. The agency has filled 66 new bus driver positions and plans to add more staff to boost service once additional funding is available. Charlottesville Tomorrow

- ➤ The University of Virginia is launching a clinical trial to test psilocybin as a treatment for prolonged grief in 20 participants. Researchers hope the single 25-mg dose will help people feel strong connectedness and move on from grief — mental health professionals will support participants during the trial. 29 News
- ➤ The Virginia Department of Health said nine children under 5 have drowned in pools since Memorial Day—the highest count in five years with five deaths in the region covering Charlottesville (and nearby Albemarle County). The department urges parents to take a pool safety pledge and learn water safety through resources available in English (and en Español) as hot weather leads to more water recreation.
