COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville has increased affordable home building and uses the CHAP grant program to offer $1,000 & $2,500 in tax relief to eligible homeowners earning less than $62,000. City officials and nonprofit leaders work closely so partner family home buyers can keep their homes over the long term.  29 News
  • Local runner Jonathan Smith will celebrate his 40th birthday Saturday by running 40 miles for each year to raise money for the Charlottesville Free Clinic. He will leave from the UVA Rotunda at 3 a.m., invite friends to join him for portions of the run, and host an afterparty at Random Row Brewing Company where one dollar per beverage sold will go directly to the clinic.  Cville Right Now
  • Foothills Child Advocacy Center and the Sexual Assault Resource Agency will share a new location at 154 Hansen Road, Unit 201 in Charlottesville to centralize support for abuse survivors. Foothills will move in on August 15 while SARA will follow on September 1+ the co-location will streamline services and may allow for expanded programs in the future.  3WV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 21-year-old man from Lockhart, Texas pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges for a kidnapping-for-ransom scheme that ended in a fatal shootout in the Belmont neighborhood in January 2023—where a failed ransom exchange spurred a victim’s husband to fatally shoot one kidnapper.  29 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Honor Committee met virtually on July 20 to discuss potential changes to the sanctioning process regarding the role of the Counsel for the Community (the position that represents the student body) and concerns that varying approaches could affect case outcomes. Leadership changes were also announced as Alex Church stepped down from vice chair for investigations and Cody Scarce was selected in a closed special election.  The Cavalier Daily
  • The wife of the late Frank Batten Sr. donated $5 million to UVa—this gift will help 300 aspiring teachers earn their degrees.  The Daily Progress

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a 40% drop in speeding near Albemarle County High School, the county announced it will expand its speed camera program by installing cameras next month on Rockfish Gap Turnpike near Western Albemarle, Henley Middle School, and Brownsville Elementary—adding cameras on four school bus stop arms to hold drivers accountable.  Cville Right Now
  • Charlottesville is starting two water main projects that will boost water reserves and improve connections with Albemarle County—these projects aim to strengthen the region's water supply.  The Daily Progress
