COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families filled the streets of Westhaven today with food, music and connection as the celebration brought neighbors together. The event uplifted the local community and provided an opportunity for residents to support one another.  29 News
  • Families attended a back-to-school bash at the Ting Pavilion that offered free supplies, music, and games and brought hundreds together with school staff and local groups. The event featured a downtown passport scavenger hunt — a new addition — that gave kids extra fun as they prepared for the school year.  29 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Nyeem Hill, a Scottsville teen who led a police chase that forced UVa to shelter in place in February, received nearly two additional years in jail for a probation violation—after a judge ruled he was armed despite his lawyer’s claim that his jeans were too tight to hold a gun.  The Daily Progress

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Albemarle County was awarded a $9.7M grant from the Virginia Business Ready Sites Program for site readiness work at Rivanna Futures (acquired in December 2023). The grant, administered by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, will expedite pre-construction activities to attract high-quality jobs in sectors such as bioscience and defense (a key aim for the county).  Cville Right Now

  • Hundreds of demonstrators lined the sidewalks outside the Shops at Stonefield in Charlottesville — they took part in the nationwide 'Rage Against the Regime' protests.  29 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UVA Football head coach Tony Elliott is focusing on recruiting the best in-state talent—bolstered by new facilities and investments—to build a stronger team in the spirit of former coach George Welsh. The team opens its season on Aug. 30 against Coastal Carolina as Elliott aims to keep top players local.  Cville Right Now
